Scrapline Union

The union of the dockers and riggers who built the city, run from the Yards.

Who they are

Scrapline is the Fringe's syndicate of powered labourers. It is a trade union of locals, elders and a boss who signs the death-book personally, and it treats Legends as workers.

In the creator

In the dev build The faction pick runs in the development build.

The creator's second screen asks "Whose city is it?" The answers are Meridian, the Undercurrent, Scrapline, or Unwritten, which declines.

A pick gives you standing with that faction at its first tier, and nothing with the others. Standing has tiers for each faction, comes from quests, contracts, war and events, and is never lost, so one Legend can reach the top with all three. Almost nothing earns standing yet.

It also gets you the faction's banner, a shelf of its costume, and its channels and halls. Crews can mix factions, so friends on different sides still play together. The pick is set once, and the intake record is permanent.

A head start, not a rank.

Argument: Endure, or stop having to?

Intake: A union card in the Yards. Nobody asks about your paperwork, your ware, your face or where you came from. You are asked to work, and then you are fed.

Ground

Scrapline holds the Yards wall to wall. It is the one district where showing up without a union card gets you looked at twice, licence or none.

The day starts with chains at 05:00 and ends with a whistle at 17:00. After it the Ledger House floor fills, the book comes out, and everybody stops talking.

Crane Zero stands at the head of the Gantry Line, and the membership maintains it. Nobody races off it on a day the book has been opened.

The union also keeps a board in the Wick, with the other two factions' boards a short walk away.

Ranks

Lowest first. Carded is the rank that changes how people speak to you.

  1. Dayhand

Day labour on the salvage lines.

  2. Carded

    The handshake, and a card.

  3. Gaffer

Runs a yard's crews day to day.

  4. Keystone

The top rung. Few members have met one.

The argument inside

The union's argument is endure, or stop having to. The elders hold that endurance is what has kept anyone alive for twelve years. The stewards say enduring has become a routine the union keeps because it always has.

The book

Scrapline's death-book, kept at the Ledger House.

The book is a hard-backed folio, kept flat in a steel case bolted under the Ledger House counter. It has a hasp and no lock, and it has three spines.

A wrong entry is struck through once, never erased, and re-entered below. A name goes in the book once.

What it offers a player

Designed Vendors, war doctrine and deployables are the game's design.

The vendor sells materials, Salvaging perks and frame variants.

The Med-Fund clinic cuts the fee you pay to respawn at a med-station. Your Legend's stats stay the same. Its Deadband doctrine is on the war page.

Partly built The standing screen carries a title for each tier as client content. The first reads:

The union writes your name down. It matters more than it sounds.

The story

Designed Faction questlines and side stories are written and not built.

Act 1 is called "The Open Order". You come up through the Scrapline as day labour on the salvage lines. For you the union is a shift, a med-fund and a hand up when the Fringe takes something from you. Big Ferro notices how you work, and you earn a card.

It is the only faction questline you can start before your First Splice.

What the others say

Toward Meridian, Scrapline feels tiredness more than anger: you cannot hate the weather. Toward the Undercurrent it feels fear for them, which comes out as scorn.

Ferro would give you his coat and not one word. I'd give you the word and keep the coat. He's the better man.
