Lowline at night: graffiti-covered broadcast towers under concrete overpasses, lit windows behind them.

Lowline

Lowline sits under the overpass deck below the Coil, and the Warrens are under that.

Under the deck

Mapped The streets and the Warrens' entrances are laid out in the build. The Pit, the Deep Market and the pirate jack are the game's design.

Lowline is a district of jammed comms towers, glitch-green graffiti and a signal that never quite stays legal, however often Meridian claims to have taken it down. The Undercurrent works here in the open, because the place is too tangled with old infrastructure for Meridian to secure without shutting down half the city's comms.

Below the shadow of the Coil, an overpass deck roofs a large part of the district, with the street level far below it and the Warrens deeper still. It is permanent structural dusk, and you can cross it topside and never see it. The Sluice Fall pours into the cistern and is the one-way shortcut in.

Ghostware is at home here, and swimmers on Tiderunner get the cistern and the flooded streets below the deck.

The Antenna, the Jam and the Warrens

The Static Antenna

A rebar-and-salvage transmission spike wrapped floor to crown in cracked paint and cable. Everyone in Catena has heard Nyx Static's voice come out of that tower's general direction, though nobody has confirmed that she is in it. It is taller than its district is deep. People with no business up it climb it constantly.

The Overpass Knot

A five-deck interchange tangled through the district.

The Jam

Designed The brownouts are the game's design.

A comms-jamming brownout below the deck, inside which flight sputters. The Warrens are no-fly outright. Down there the ceiling decides it.

The Warrens

The closest thing Catena has to a single unlicensed bazaar. No one authority runs it. It works on old dock-labour custom, and an offence against one stallholder is treated as an offence against all of them. Contraband chrome, forged paperwork, fenced salvage and a chop shop all trade here. See the Warrens.

There's no boss down here. There's just me, and people being sensible near me.

The Warrens' arbiter

The honest door

The Warrens have four street stairwells and one honest door with a queue. Nobody uses the honest door, and somebody keeps repainting it: eleven times so far, in eleven slightly different greys, all by the same hand.

The Pit and the Deep Market

Designed Both are the game's design.

The Pit is the underground duel venue, and it strips a Legend to the same baseline. The Deep Market takes only ROOT Ciphers and rotates its stock weekly.

The pirate jack

Designed It is the game's design.

An unlicensed way into the Lattice, under an Undercurrent charter, with no paperwork and no questions. It is one of the ways in that the city never chartered.

Who lives down here

  1. 01:00The loud hours begin.
  2. 05:00They end. There is no dawn in Lowline, only a shift in the deck's underlighting.

Everybody the registry made expensive lives here, along with a large ordinary population who are not political at all and live in the cheapest district with a roof. Dead-drop night comes once a month. Visitors find the Warrens' silence disturbing.

A frightened young Legend hides in an alley holding a glowing radio as a drone's searchlight sweeps past.

On the walls

NOT HIDING. NOT FILED.

What the cell offers

Designed

The Undercurrent hands out its quests here, and a fence trades in salvage. Programs and black-market deck mods are sold in the Warrens. Dens are on offer too, and the pirate jack leads down into the Lattice.

In the dark

  • Nyx Static is the voice. Every Legend hears her before meeting a soul in the cell, and she cannot be placed.
  • the Curator holds the Deep Market and speaks entirely in appraisals.
  • The Warrens' arbiter insists that nobody is in charge and settles a stall dispute in about ninety seconds.
